Developing RE4

The development of the highly anticipated Resident Evil 4 remake reportedly began in 2018 under studio M-Two, before being brought in-house by Capcom in early 2021, led by the Division 1 team with several members from the Resident Evil 2 Remake returning.

Resident Evil 4 aims to reimagine the storyline while modernizing the graphics and controls. Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi acknowledged the challenge of remaking the popular game, but aims to maintain its essence while making it even more thrilling.

The development team was split into three groups working on the village, castle, and island, with the latter included in the final version. The game will also feature expanded characterizations, including Ashley’s relationship with Leon and a more in-depth look at Luis. The briefcase will return for inventory management and the game will have reduced quick time events.

The visuals were crafted for maximum horror, and Leon’s characterization was made more realistic and responsive to enemies. The game is being developed using the RE Engine.
