Modern Combat is a popular series of shooter video games developed and published by Gameloft. The series, available mainly on Android and iOS devices, offers players a thrilling gaming experience similar to that of the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchises.
Players can expect to engage in multiple missions in varied environments, with different tasks to complete as they take on the role of a soldier fighting against terrorist enemies.
The series includes titles such as Modern Combat: Sandstorm, Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus, Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, Modern Combat 5: Blackout, and Modern Combat: Versus, all of which have received high praise from players and critics alike.
Best Mobile First-Person Shooter
Modern Combat Versus is the latest installment in the popular Gameloft series, released more than three years after Modern Combat 5: Blackout. This new episode shifts its focus solely on the multiplayer aspect of the game, rather than offering a new campaign. As a result, it can be seen as a derivative experience, drawing heavily from popular titles such as Call of Duty, Titanfall, and Overwatch.
The game’s technical realization is top-notch, making it one of the best in the mobile gaming sector. The game’s primary mode, “Control the Area,” is a fast-paced, four-against-four match where players capture and defend a point on the map. The touch controls have been improved and the game features unlockable characters with unique abilities, similar to Overwatch.
However, it’s worth noting that the game does have a “pay-to-win” aspect, but it’s mitigated by a balancing system that prevents players from facing opponents at a much higher level. Gameloft actually did a really good job at this, so it’s not too difficult for beginners to play.
The game’s visuals are excellent, but the lack of a campaign mode is disappointing for some fans of the series. The shift to multiplayer-only is a commercial decision by Gameloft. And really, who liked the previous Modern Combat games for their stories?
Plays Great on a Budget Gaming Rig or Laptop!
Modern Combat Versus is available in the Windows Store for PC users to download and play. It’s significantly smaller than other modern first-person shooter games, yet it still looks great and has a ton of features!
If you’re looking to have a CoD-like experience on your PC but don’t have a decent gaming rig, then Modern Combat Versus is the perfect game for you! The matches are very fast-paced, and the ranking system is honestly, very addicting.
Finding a game that looks as good as this, and doesn’t require a high-end PC to run is a real challenge. The performance settings are simple to tweak if you want to lower them, but the highest graphics settings work well on most (if not all) modern computers.
Game Modes and Maps
Modern Combat Versus is lacking when it comes to the variety of game modes available, as right now there is only Team Deathmatch, Classic Multiplayer, Zone Control, and Bounty.
It’s not a bad thing though, as the lobbies are always populated since users aren’t divided between a ton of different game modes. Getting in a match is quick, at all hours of the day and night!
In the screenshot above, you can see the game mode selection screen, which only lets you choose between two different types at the moment. The one on the right sometimes changes and is usually tied to an event.
The Zone Control game mode is a staple in the Modern Combat series, first appearing in Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation and Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, and later being added to Modern Combat 5: Blackout in the Spring Update.
This mode pits two teams of up to 12 players each against each other, with the main objective being to capture and control three flags designated as Flag Alpha, Flag Bravo, and Flag Charlie. Points are awarded to the team that controls a flag, and the more players in the capture zone, the faster the capturing process becomes. This is particularly effective in Blackout, where each player’s presence is said to double the capturing speed.
Players can also hear radio communications that give hints on where the enemy is located, and where they should focus their efforts to capture a flag. Zone Control is a straightforward game mode that requires skill, patience, and teamwork to succeed.
In Modern Combat Versus, the game mode called Bounty offers a unique twist on the traditional Team Deathmatch. Players work together as a team to eliminate enemies and collect the Data Chips they drop upon death. These Data Chips are used to earn points for the team, with regular chips worth 5 points and special chips worth up to 15 points based on the enemy’s killstreak.
One key strategy in Bounty is to protect high-value teammates and recover ally chips before the enemy can. Players on a higher killstreak will have an icon above their head, making them a target for the opposing team. It’s important for players to work together, using tactics such as flanking enemies to ensure victory.
With that said, the Bounty game mode is a fun and engaging experience that remains team-focused and highlights the strengths of each Agent, regardless of their role as attacker or defender.
Maps in Modern Combat Versus
The game has five different maps as of now, and each one is perfected for fast-paced matches. There are plenty of places to take cover and heal, and the maps are neighbor too big or too small.
Modern Combat Versus maps: Apex, Sandstorm, Slums, Port, Blackrock.
Should You Play Modern Combat Versus in 2023?
Absolutely! If you love first-person shooters and want to play a game with fair matchmaking and fast-paced game modes – then Modern Combat Versus is the perfect game for you. The ranking system is perfected, and there are always new events going on so you will never get bored.
It is a free-to-play game, although it’s definitely not a pay-to-win game. Sure, you can make small purchases in the in-game store to speed up your process, but matchmaking is fair 99% of the time.
With that said, there is definitely a benefit to playing Modern Combat on a PC versus a mobile device. Playing with a keyboard and mouse will provide you with a pleasant advantage, and if it lags, just lower the Performance settings. Lag will get you killed in this game!
However, most laptops and desktops can play with the performance settings on High and have no issues – it is not a demanding game and the minimum PC requirements are not high like most video games of this nature.
